Beginning to know and unknow.
All the concepts that I am exploring on this web site, I am just beginning to understand. Through philosophy I am reducing my self-conscious disorders. I have been drawn to the Taoist philosophy for nearly 30 years, but I never understood it on a life level. In late 2012, I read The Wisdom of Insecurity by the philosopher Alan Watts. He taught me that I am my other. That the bee is the flower. More recently, I have been accepting wisdom through the teachings of Arthur Schopenhauer, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Friedrich Nietzsche, and D. T. Suzuki.
What is Tao to me:
I guess the Tao idea is that, the feeling I have as “me-ness” is the same feeling all humans have, animals have, maybe even plants and rocks have. That my individual body dies, but the “me-ness” lives on because my “me-ness” is already infinitely happening all over this planet and universe. So this idea is that just one, eternal, infinite self exists as everything and nothing.
In the measure in which: the uniter is united.
The intent of this web site is to share art related to exploring the advantage of leaning toward unity and freedom. I am exploring my human and planet’s conditionings. I wonder if we can accept and trust that our future human incarnations will be those who can have their knowledge, without possessing it, and limit their limits.
Conditioning and self-consciousness.
I learned, from Stephen Levine's book "A Gradual Awakening", that conditioning is karma. I learned from Nietzche that it is regenerative to undevelop degenerative conditionings. I am learning that self-consciousness is the degenerative condition to be undeveloped. I am starting to realize that by just leaning toward a less imagined separate self allows me to reduce my anxieties.
Chronic anxiety is chronic self-consciousness.
When I was 19 years old I was diagnosed with an obsessive personality style and chronic anxiety. I later learned that many creative people suffer from anxiety because they allow themselves to project concepts into the future. I've heard that anxiety is like entertaining ghosts. I thought that was funny, like having these ghosts for tea? But now I understand that these tea ghost guests are me, that I am their creator. That it is regenerative to understand that it is my human condition and my self- and soceity-conditionings that create my anxieties. These conditionings are my karma.
Changing my karma.
I'm learning that I can change my karma by reconditioning and unconditioning. In 1993, I unwittingly, used this method to quit smoking a pack of cigarettes per day. I let go of the concept that "I am a cigarette smoker." I convinced myself that I was a nonsmoker that absurdly wanted a cigarette. Previous times I tried to quit, I imagined myself as "I'm cigarette smoker" who was self denying the completion of my "cigarette-smoker-self." This thinking only led to struggle and ultimately failure to quit smoking. Unknowing that "I'm a cigarette smoker" reduced struggle and it became easier to forget to smoke cigarettes. I plan to unknow more of my self-conscious disorders.
